Welcome to the World of Douglas!

Dear Douglas -

Why is it so wrong for me to tie my leash to my baby stroller? Everyone says not to do this but my dog is really well behaved. He would never pull.

Signed -

Dear Training for a 10k -

You're kidding me, right? Have you not seen the all the squirrels?

Dear Douglas -

How do dogs forgive so easily? We are so awful to you and yet you always forgive. How can you teach us to be the same?

Dog admirer

Dear Dog Admirer -
And might I say, I love this name. We know you don't really mean it. We know that you're not all bad. Humans can be very unpredictable in their emotions. Example: We break out of the house for an AWESOME run through the neighborhood. The day is perfect. There are so many sights and smells to behold. It is an awesome run. Then, we see you. You're calling our name. Sure - we might hit a few more smells but we come back. As soon as we come back, you smack us.
But you called us!
This makes NO SENSE. You call. We come -- maybe a little slowly -- and you hit us.
Humans do not makes sense in what they do but we love you despite this.

(My human says: Animal researchers tell us  that dogs have the "emotional IQ" of a toddler. They feel joy, fear, anxiety, happiness, contentment and they can feel despair. However, the complexity of these emotions are not the same as humans. Humans factor circumstances. When someone breaks a promise or talks about you behind your back, you will remember this and have distrust around this person whereas dogs respond to your actions in the present. Unless repeated abused, dogs do not dwell on the past as we do.)

Dear Douglas -
We just brought home a new puppy and we are so excited!!! Any advice?

Sincerely,
Puppy Love

Dear Puppy Love -
So, you shouldn't schedule anything else except to play with your puppy. Going to the movie? Forget it. Hanging out with friends? No way. This time should be all about loving with and playing with your puppy. The more time you spend with your puppy, the better. You should probably quit all other activities and jut focus on your new family member. This is the best course of action for you both. Your human friends will understand when you don't want to see them anymore. Just focus on the dog and no one or anything else.
